Climate change is causing a progressive reduction in water reserves in Catalonia, placing us in an increasingly frequent water emergency scenario. For this reason, at MSconsultors<\/strong>, we are proud to have collaborated with the Caldes de Malavella City Council<\/strong> in drafting its Drought Emergency Plan<\/strong>, a strategic tool for effectively managing municipal water resources.<\/p>\n

Diagnosis of the territory and available resources<\/h3>\n

Caldes de Malavella has a network of 18 wells<\/strong> and also receives water from the Ter reservoirs<\/strong>, managed by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA). To prepare the Plan, the following was analyzed:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • The available volumes<\/strong> at the different collection points.<\/li>\n
  • The water demand<\/strong> of the population.<\/li>\n
  • The transportation losses<\/strong> within the network.<\/li>\n
  • The infrastructures and supply capacity<\/strong> of the municipality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    A phased adaptive strategy<\/h3>\n

    Following the ACA guidelines, the Plan establishes drought phases<\/strong> (normal, pre-alert, alert, exceptional and emergency) and defines a set of progressive measures<\/strong> to reduce water consumption in each phase, such as:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Limitation of irrigation and recreational uses.<\/li>\n
    • Reduction of non-essential municipal consumption.<\/li>\n
    • Campaigns citizen awareness.<\/li>\n
    • Strengthening surveillance and leak control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      These measures have been agreed with the City Council<\/strong> and aim to preserve available resources for as long as possible.<\/p>\n

      The importance of municipal Drought Plans<\/h3>\n

      Municipalities play a fundamental role in efficient water management<\/strong>. Drought Plans not only help to prevent critical situations<\/strong>, but also allow planning the response<\/strong> in an orderly and coherent manner with the local reality.<\/p>\n
